I will vote for Sally Hoelscher for the Iowa City Community School Board on Tuesday, and I urge others to do the same.
I have known Hoelscher for 13 years and have admired her dedication to children and education since we met. She has been a volunteer in the district for 12 years at the elementary, junior and senior high levels. She is also an educator herself, having taught in the University of Iowa Department of Pharmacology, written curriculum for children and been an evaluator for the Discovery Science Challenge Essay Program.
Hoelscher has experience serving on and leading boards and committees similar to the school board. As a board member, she will do her homework, listen to members of the community and work effectively with her fellow board members to make decisions in the best interests of all students.
Hoelscher wants to provide all students with the opportunities they need to succeed in school and in life through equitable access to technology and other essential tools. She wants to use long-range planning to help determine the best use of the human, physical and financial resources in the district.
Finally, Hoelscher wants to explore innovations in teaching and learning to the benefit of our children.
If you are looking for a caring, thoughtful, proactive, effective member of the School Board, I hope you will join me in voting for Hoelscher on Tuesday.

I am writing in support of Sally Hoelscher, who is running for Tuesday's Iowa City Community School Board election. Hoelscher emphasizes the need for the board to support the hard work that schools are doing -- to be a booster rather than a critic. Most importantly she will read, talk to people, study the issues and bring an intelligent viewpoint to meetings.
West High parents like me can feel comfortable supporting Hoelscher, a City High mom, because she genuinely cares about the welfare of the entire district, not just particular programs or one part of town.
A question has been asked about Hoelscher's attitudes toward labor. This is a legitimate issue, given how many people the school district employs. Although she has not had the opportunity to join a union, I think you will find her a solid supporter of the people who are so very important to the day-to-day success of the schools, whether they fix the equipment, serve lunch or teach the children.

The Iowa City Community School Board will have some fresh faces after the Sept. 13 election, and we think Sally Hoelscher should be among them.
We have known Hoelscher as a longtime volunteer at Lucas Elementary because we were part of that community for many years. She has served as PTO president and also has volunteered extensively at three other schools in the district. She is a deliberate and critical thinker who would give her very best to this volunteer position.
Hoelscher's emphasis on being proactive is something our district can benefit from. In addition to long-term planning for district curriculum and facilities, she is interested in meeting the needs of modern education -- including the use of cutting-edge technology and progressive new approaches (such as partnerships with outside organizations and giving consideration to possibilities such as vocational/arts/language centers).
Please join us in voting for Hoelscher on Sept. 13.

I am writing to support Sally Hoelscher's candidacy for the four-year term in Tuesday's Iowa City School Board election.
I have known Hoelscher for eight years. I have interacted with her as a parent, an educator, a volunteer, a leader and a friend. She is an outstanding candidate for many reasons.
» Hoelscher is experienced. She has worked for 12 years as a volunteer in district schools, and she has been a member and officer of the Districtwide Parents' Organization.
» Hoelscher is committed. Her work in the district has never been limited to the schools that her own children attend. In fact, her own children will graduate from high school before her term is up, so she is running for this position to work for all students in the district.
» Hoelscher is fair. I know from my own experience that she is passionate about the idea that every student in the district should have the opportunities they need to excel in school and in life.
» Hoelscher is responsible. She will work creatively to use the district human, physical and financial resources to their fullest potential.
» Finally, Hoelscher is forward-thinking. Since announcing her candidacy, she has consistently identified long-range planning as one of her highest priorities, and she will place students first by exploring innovative ways of teaching and learning.
I encourage everyone to help elect Hoelscher on Tuesday.

I have known Sally Hoelscher since she was in my ninth grade honors English class in Columbia, Missouri. She was an excellent student, perceptive, and analytical. I have followed her career with admiration, and have seen how she has used her intellect and compassion to become an excellent wife, mother, professional, and citizen. Based on my knowledge of Sally Hoelscher’s accomplishments in these realms, I believe that Iowa City schools would benefit from her membership on your school board.
